Global Capability Center (GCC)

Build your offshore team your way.

Nano and Micro GCCs give companies worldwide their own dedicated offshore engineering center, from a focused pod to a multi-team hub. Forward Deployed Engineers embed with your in-house team while SMI manages the technology and development end to end. You own the roadmap and the IP.

Offshore development center vs IT outsourcing services

IT outsourcing vendor

  • Vendor directs the work
  • Team changes per project
  • Knowledge leaves at contract end

Full captive GCC

  • Foreign entity and facilities to set up
  • High upfront commitment
  • Long path to stable delivery

SMI Nano / Micro GCC

  • Dedicated team, your direction
  • You keep the roadmap and IP
  • Start small, scale in stages

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a Global Capability Center (GCC)?

A Global Capability Center (GCC) is a dedicated offshore team that works only for your company, under your direction. It is also called an offshore development center (ODC), a global delivery center or, for business functions, a global business services (GBS) center. With SMI TechSolutions, your GCC runs as your own team while SMI manages hiring, payroll, IT and compliance.

How is a GCC different from outsourced IT services?

With IT outsourcing services, the vendor directs the work and people rotate between clients. A GCC is your own dedicated team: it follows your roadmap, stays with you over time and keeps product knowledge and IP inside your business.

What are Forward Deployed Engineers?

Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) are senior SMI engineers who work directly alongside your in-house team, in your tools, meetings and workflows. SMI manages the technology and development, so you set the direction without carrying the engineering overhead. FDEs learn your product and priorities, help scope the work and set up your GCC, and act as the link between your team and the offshore engineers. As the GCC becomes self-sufficient, they hand off day-to-day delivery and stay available for complex releases and new initiatives.

Offshore or nearshore software development: which fits?

Nearshore software development shares more of your workday. An SMI offshore GCC offers planned live overlap with your time zone, a large engineering talent pool and work that continues after your day ends. The right choice depends on how much real-time collaboration the work needs.

What is the difference between a Nano GCC and a Micro GCC?

A Nano GCC is a focused team of about 5–20 specialists on one product or function. A Micro GCC is a multi-skill center of about 20–100+ people across several workstreams, with dedicated leadership and joint governance.

What is a cross-functional team?

A cross-functional team is one offshore team that owns a product end to end. A delivery lead works alongside engineers, QA, data and AI specialists, and product design when needed, so planning, building, testing and releasing happen inside one team instead of being handed between vendors. It suits companies that want one team accountable for the outcome. Most cross-functional teams start at around 8–25 people and grow as the product does.

What is an Extended Scrum Team?

An Extended Scrum Team adds SMI engineers and QA directly to your existing scrum teams. They join your sprint planning, standups, reviews and retros, work from your backlog in your tools, and report to your product owner or engineering manager. It is the fastest way to add velocity without creating a new team structure, typically 3–10 people, and you can scale it up or down sprint by sprint.

How are BOM and BOT different?

In Build-Operate-Manage (BOM), SMI builds your team and keeps managing operations long term. In Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), SMI builds and stabilizes the team, then transfers it to you on agreed terms.

How much overlap will my team get?

SMI GCC teams work shifts planned around your time zone, for companies in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. Most teams get at least 3–4 hours of live overlap each day, with extended overlap available.

Do I need to set up a foreign legal entity?

No. Your company contracts with SMI TechSolutions, and SMI employs the team and handles payroll, benefits and compliance. With BOT, you can move the team into your own entity later.

Can my GCC handle intelligent automation and AI?

Yes. Add an Intelligent Automation pod for RPA, workflows and document processing, or an AI pod for agents, copilots and RAG. Both run alongside your core engineering and QA team.

Who owns the code and IP?

You do. Your GCC works on your roadmap in your tools, and the code, IP and product knowledge it creates belong to your company.
